I want a Pink Chaddi!

“Do you have pink underwear”? I asked my friend over a cup of coffee on a lazy afternoon.

“Hmm…yes… I do actually. They are pink and lacy…perfect for shocking Vikram and then you know what…” she stated mischievously.

“Yes…yes I know” I didn’t want to hear her bedroom stories but get to my point without sounding like a pervert.

“Do you have some cheap and simple ones that you don’t plan to wear anymore”? I managed to blurt out.

“Hmmm….maybe…Why”? She was beginning to look at me oddly by now. What was I expecting anyways!

“Can I take them”? I said this as sweetly as possible with a straight face.

“Okay now you are freaking me out! Why again”? She was staring at me by now with weird expression on her face. Yes. She thinks that her best friend has turned into a pervert.

“It’s for a good cause. It’s to fight injustice! It’s to show that women are equal and they have the right to do what they please!” The feminist in me woke up with a jolt.

“With pink underwear? Have you lost your mind? How”? She was still looking at me oddly. Phew!

Well to the say the least the conversation with my friend went on for a while. I tried to explain to her that I am not a creep and my motives behind asking for her underwear were quite noble.

Scary and odd events are happening in the country right now. Which one? Unless you have locked yourself in an underground cell with no TV, radio, newspapers and even human contact, you will know that recently Sri Ram Sena in Mangalore attacked some women who were in a local pub drinking. They were called “anti hindu”, “loose” and “forward”. Seriously, like women didn’t have enough issues with nagging fathers, pushy bosses, demanding boyfriends, annoying husbands! Now even unknown men are also telling them what to do! That too when they are finally competent enough to make more than men, spend and live the life they want to some bullies who are seriously insecure people have the audacity to commit such an horrendous act in public.

Something needs to be done and sure enough action is been taken. Four youths from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore have take femme powers in their own hands. It’s called “The Pink Chaddi movement”! The idea is simple enough. They are requesting women and men from all over the country to send pink chaddis to the Sri Ram Sena office as a sign of protest and anger. But why pink? Well, mainly because it’s a sign of power of women and it’s a nice colour! This protest is not just for women though. Since they know that lot of men also who feel that this audacity should be reprimanded, finding a pink chaddi for them might be a little troublesome. So colour is not a bar!

Remember “Burn the bra” movement which took place in the 60’s? If you don’t know what I am talking about- in the 60 ‘s amidst the flower power revolution women in US gathered from all over and burned their bra’s in mass gatherings as a sign of their freedom. This is something like that. Except a pink chaddi is involved. In a peaceful yet liberating way women from all over will let the hooligans know that in this democracy such ruffian behavior is not appreciated and definitely won’t be tolerated by women or men!

Long live pink chaddis!
