I am an avid reader. I read everything from comics to trashy novels to occasionally some good ones too. I also watch Oprah. I watch her and I am a member of her website because I love her. Simple. Okay, let me make it clear. I am NOT in LOVE with her! I just love, adore, worship, (whatever you may want to call it) her. I look forward to her life advice and dream of being like her (Yes…Very very rich!) and also very wise. (She is so wise!)
So one balmy afternoon I was watching one of her shows where she recommends a book which apparently changed her life. It’s called “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle. She went on and on about the brilliance of the book and how its life altering and anyone with a pint size brain at least should pick it up (Well…she didn’t say those exact words bit you get the hint, right?). I didn’t care whether it was a paid review or a just a publicity stunt to promote the book but by the same day afternoon, I had purchased the book.
What did I think? Well…Let’s put it this way. They say “you don’t find good books, they find you”. I believe this line now. “The Power of Now” is such a book which one will understand only when they are ready for it. It is so mind bogglingly brilliant that at first read it seems quite confusing and a lot of mumbo jumbo. It talks about how the past and the present has no meaning and value and all that we need to do to dissolve any pain, resentment and anger from our lives is just by realizing “The Now”. As I said, it sounds like a lot of modern day jargon but once you are hooked on to this concept you won’t be able to put it down. Mind you! This book is NOT a fast paced fiction novel. It’s like a textbook with a lot of wise quotes from ancient scriptures, general life philosophy. One reads to read and re-read, mark and underline and re-read again to fully understand it. But when the words start getting clear…it’s fantastic. It pierces right through the heart.
I have been reading the book since the past one year now. I still haven’t understood it fully and every time I read it I understand something new about life. The word of the book clears my head. It calms me down. It actually makes me realize that there is no other moment than the “NOW”. Oprah was right. Anyone with a pint size brain must pick and read this book. As I said, Oprah is very wise and she knows what she is talking about. (I love her!)
A quote from the book:
“True salvation is a state of freedom-from fear, from suffering. From a perceived state of lack and insufficiency and therefore from all wanting, needing, grasping and clinging”.
