Milk - Never Blend In

I just finished watching Milk. Although the movie ended 20 minutes ago, I still cant find the exact words to describe what I am feeling. Its a mixture of awe, inspiration and wonder. Sean Penn has blown my mind again. I was very impressed with his portrayal of a mentally challenged father in I am in Sam but compared to this performance, the previous one looks amateurish. He has dived into the character of Harvey Milk so well that It left me wondering...

Is he actually straight in real life?
How can any actor be so good?
How must he had prepared for this role?

If anyone else but Sean Penn would had won the Oscar for the best actor, then there surely would had been a foul play involved. Watching him perform is like watching the opera. It is overwhelming and awe inspiring.

The story revolves around the life of Harvey Milk in the 70's, who was California's first openly gay elected official and activist who was ultimately assassinated. The tells the tale of hope, struggle and the criminalization of gay people in America and how Milk gave hope to all of them while fighting for their rights.

The story maybe simple but the direction of Gus Van Sant is brilliant with insertions of actual footage in the film. Every character is memorable and leaves an impression like Milks long time partner Scotty played by James Franco. The narrative is simple and does not over hype or undermine the seriousness of the issue.

I wonder why there not more movies like these? Its from this movie that I learned about the real Harvey Milk who gave courage to so many gay people to lead a normal and dignified life. To read more about Harvey Milk click here.

I don't know how many people in India will get to watch this movie. But if you get a chance, please grab a copy. You might not get to see a performance like this in a long time in such a heart wrenching story.
